Southern Pacific in Northern California circa 1990. The Shasta Division goes through some spectacular scenery. A busy part of this railroad. Plenty of Lumber and general merchandise. Intermodal traffic, as well.

Redding is our start point. SP train OAPTF crosses the Redding Trestle. 8240 an SD40T-2 is the lead tunnel motor. 1990.
A train meet at Sims siding
As a helper on the lead, 7308 leaves Dunsmuir. Train is West Colton to Eugene, Oregon, as WCEUM. Two tunnel motors and another SD40 follow. This one is chased a bit. The rails are to Redding from here.
Train led by an SD40 unit 8340 and 8253 with three more locomotives is above Cantara Loop. This OAPTF is Eastbound.
Train PTLAF decends on Cantara Loop. Dynamic brakes are whining!

Unusual at the time. A couple of SD9s and a trailing GP9 in this 6 unit lash-up. South of Black Butte.
At Mount Shasta, a Rio Grande GP40 runs second.
The occasional caboose can still be found.
